The days are shorter and a little bit colder and even though the mercury never really drops here, many people still crave hearty, rib-stickin’ food no matter what the occasion – weddings included.
If you’re having your wedding in winter, you could keep your guests happy during cocktail hour with some really different and unique bites. You could serve small bowls or cups of seasonal soup, as well as miniature versions of winter favourites like steak pies, macaroni cheese and burgers.
When it comes to drinks, coffee, hot chocolate and mulled wine and cider will go down a treat.
Don’t try to recreate summer
You’re not having a summer wedding, so don’t try to make it feel like one! Dispense with the pavlovas and the raspberry jellies and let your guests get their teeth into autumn and winter favourites like pumpkin soup, roast meats and vegetables and hot puddings.
Of course, you’ll want to cater for all tastes and diets, so make sure there’s a hearty vegetarian or vegan option, as well as a fish course too. A traditional roast dinner or a hog roast will make your wedding dinner one to remember, and the roast vegetables will go well with the vegetarian option too.
You already know that fancy layered fruity desserts are off the winter menu. You need to get back to basics and serve up puds that are reminiscent of school – only better.
Try a huge chocolate cake that’s served with lashings of custard or ginger sauce. The kids will go mad for a hot chocolate station or a chocolate fountain, especially if they have unlimited marshmallows to dip into it.
You could also have a huge profiterole wedding cake, as this will go really well with hot drinks like chocolate, coffee and mulled wine.
You’ve got to have some bubbly, that goes without saying, but mulled wines and ciders will get a lot of attention and approval. Make sure there’s cold wines and other drinks as well, though.
